Alph's job wasn't the most people-oriented. He described it as "something of a scholar" to avoid having to explain exactly what one of the universities employed him (and paid him so well) for, but it was in his field of interest and pulled in more than enough to pay the bills. But he still did internally commissioned work, which meant dealing with people who didn't completely understand his field of expertise, which led to friction when his findings didn't match whatever narrative they were trying to put together.
As a result, Alph was in a very grumpy mood when he finally got home of this particular evening, slamming the door behind himself and letting out a noise somewhere between a sigh and a growl as he tried to figure out what to do next. Being polite in the face of what he'd been dealing with all day had left him with what felt like a lot of bottled-up energy and he knew he had to let some of it go, whether it be via relaxing or doing something to burn it off. The question was which he'd rather do.
